About

The Denver County Court serves the public by effectuating justice in the areas of state and city criminal cases, traffic cases, civil and small claims cases, name changes, temporary and permanent protection, orders, and probation related services.

History

On November 6th, 1962 a legislatively referred constitutional amendment known as Ballot Proposal #1, asked the voters to repeal Article IV of the state constitution and replace it with a new version of Article IV that would implement a reorganization of the statewide court structure. This change would, among other things, set county court jurisdictional parameters, eliminate justice of the peace courts, and allow for the Charter of the City and County of Denver to address judicial appointments and pay. If passed, the effective date would take place three-years in the future on the second Tuesday of January 1965. The proposal passed 64.24% (303,740 yes votes) to 35.76% (169,052 no votes); thus making January 12, 1965 the official birthdate of the Denver County Court.
